Courageous visits to launch Constitution Week

LIHUE — Sarah Courageous of Honolulu, a Daughter of the American Revolution, made a special trip to Kauai Friday morning to accept a mayoral proclamation from Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. announcing Constitution Week on Sept. 17 through 23.

The Constitution of the United States of America was signed on Sept. 17, 226 years ago.

Described as the supreme law of the land which embodies the principles of freedom and the pursuit of happiness guaranteed to every American, the Constitution is promoted during Constitution Week by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Daughters of the American Revolution successfully petitioned Congress in 1955 to observe Constitution Week each year on Sept. 17 through 23.

Courageous, noting the absence of Daughters of the American Revolution on Kauai, picked up copies of the proclamation for distribution to libraries as an effort of raising awareness on the anniversary of the signing of the document.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit volunteer women’s service group dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing Ameria’s future through better education to children, volunteering more than 250,000 hours annually to veteran patients, and awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid to students.

The Daughters of the American Revolution boasts 170,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally.

Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership.
