NAWILIWILI — There was a sense of urgency to the work being done by P.J. Arruda and a crew from Oceanic Time Warner Cable Thursday.
“We have the University of Hawaii game this afternoon and the television set needs to go up,” said Richie Ogata, owner of Bamboo Sushi & Grill, which opened its doors several weeks ago.
“We’re going to have the game on for our customers.”
Bamboo Sushi & Grill is the latest establishment to open in the Anchor Cove Shopping Center, taking the spot formerly occupied by another sushi eatery.
Bamboo Sushi & Grill is open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, punctuated by daily happy hours from 3 to 5:30 p.m.
“One of the features in the restaurant is the sake bar,” said Chris Rapacon, the restaurant manager. “We offer a variety of sake, of Japanese rice wine, and mixed drinks featuring sake.”
Highlighting the breakfast offering is the world-reknown Oki’s Banana Pancakes, said Mary Rapacon, one of the servers.
“We cannot forget the banana pancakes,” she said. “People come in asking for it by name.”
Other popular items include the Spicy Korean Chicken and the Lechon pupu.
The sushi service features a variety of choices.
“The specialty rolls have been real popular with diners,” Ogata said. “This includes our Crab Lava Roll and one called the Regulator.”
The installation of the television set Thursday completes the bar, where patrons can enjoy sports, news or other programming while enjoying a cold beverage and alternating their view between the TV programming and Kalapaki Beach.
Dining can be done inside, or on one of the patio dining tables which were already occupied by visitors to the Nawiliwili shopping center.
Barbara Oki, who has a corner of the kitchen with the view of Kalapaki Beach, is working on perfecting her already sought-after Lilikoi Mousse, a dessert item.
Ogata said Bamboo Sushi & Grill offers live entertainment Wednesday through Saturday.
“This is a real local place with large portions,” Mary said. “It’s been pretty good since we opened, and every day, it just keeps getting better.”
