POIPU — More than 30 vendors lined the oceanside lobby of the Sheraton Kauai Resort Saturday during the craft fair benefiting the Starwish Kauai organization.
“We cannot forget the 4-legged kids,” said Shelley Anderson of K9 Kauai, one of the vendors participating in the fair. “We just started up in July. Cindy Oda, the owner of K9 Kauai, does all the sewing. I’m just the mouthpiece.”
K9 Kauai, offering dog collars, leashes and bandana, sewn in Hawaiian fabric, had no trouble attracting shoppers with its array of brightly-colored aloha prints.
Anderson said shoppers can check out the new line of aloha print canine accessories on Tuesdays and Fridays at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club.
Debbie Yanagihara, craft fair coordinator for the Sheraton Kauai, said K9 Kauai was a new vendor to the popular craft fair, joining Aletha Thomas of Monkeypod Jam.
“I like to support quality Kauai-made items,” Yanagihara, herself a crafter offering quilts and hand-sewn items, said. “Aletha is a Koloa girl who uses locally-grown produce in creating her line of jams and spreads.”
Thomas, who said she will also be participating in this weekend’s Rice Festival and Spam Jamboree hosted by the Kauai Chamber of Commerce and the Rice Shopping Center, said she was approached by Randall Francisco, president of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce, while participating in the Made in Hawaii show on Oahu.
Gayle Konishi of Gayle’s Creations said she has a busy schedule, coordinating a benefit for the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School media class on Oct. 26 and another on Dec. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the middle school.
“We’re pretty much sold out for the Oct. 26 fair,” Konishi said. “There will also be a bake sale by parents of the CKMS media students, and there might be a few spots left.”
Dorina San Augustine of Crush Boutique in the Kauai Village Shopping Center was working on a different fundraiser — a fashion show, “Art in Motion,” on Oct. 26 from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott at Coconut Beach.
“This is a fundraiser to benefit the ocean safety people,” San Augustine said, recruiting Anderson and Oda to be models in the fashion show. “There are only limited seats so people are encouraged to order seats early. In addition to the live entertainment for the fashion show and dancing, there will be a live artist doing makeup on the models, and there will also be an ukulele giveaway.”
