KIF volleyball and football will make its schedule swap Friday with volleyball action at Kauai and Kapaa high school.
Opening the first two weeks of the season with Wednesday and Saturday night games, the KIF volleyball schedule will switch to Tuesdays and Fridays for the remainder of the season due to the no-lights policy for football.
Returning to effect Sept. 15, the annual no-lights policy aims to protect endangered birds from mistaking the lights as the moon and stars, thus disrupting their migration pattern.
But while there won’t be a football game under the lights tonight, plenty of meaningful action will take place on the volleyball court.
The Waimea Menehune, who own the number one spot in the KIF with a record of 4-1, will visit the 3-2 Red Raiders of Kauai High in a match that will determine if a playoff is needed to decide the season’s first half winner.
At Kapaa High School, the Warriors, who are also 3-2, will have a big game on their hands against the Island School Voyagers.
If the Warriors and Red Raiders are able to both secure victories on Friday, that would set up a three-way tie for first place in the KIF and force a three team playoff next week.
In an event of three teams tying for the top spot, two teams will will duke it out on Tuesday, Sept. 24 and will play the third team on Friday, Sept. 27. The team recieving the bye would be decided in an odd-man out scenario.
Both games tonight start with the JV squads at 5 p.m. and the varsity will follow no earlier than 6:30 p.m.
Playing the first Saturday afternoon KIF regular season football game will be the Menehune of Waimea High and the Kapaa Warriors at Hanapepe Stadium.
Sitting at 1-1 on the season, the Warriors are coming off a bye week and will be looking to bounce back from a 6-3 loss against the Red Raiders back on Sept. 6.
The Menehune will also be looking to right the ship Saturday as the currently own a 0-2 record and are coming off a 35-12 loss against the Kauai High Red Raiders last week.
The Warriors and Menehune are both in need of a win to keep pace with the undefeated Red Raiders (2-0).
Saturday’s matchup between Kapaa and Waimea will begin with JV at noon with the varsity to follow at 2:30 p.m.
KIF football will take place on Saturdays up to regular season’s conclusion on Oct. 26.
