KEKAHA — Noel Layaoen, an employee with Syngenta, showed off an ominous-looking, rusted T-bar on Thursday, just outside MacArthur Park in Kekaha.
“This could do some damage if you stepped on it,” Layaoen said, clanging the rusty piece of debris on the recently-installed fencing to remove accumulated sand.
Layaoen was one of more than 200 people from four seed companies who turned out for a beach cleanup, which spanned the area from MacArthur Park through the Second Ditch.
“This is an employee-driven initiative,” Mark Kennett of Dow AgroSciences said.
Kennett said the employees represented Syngenta, Dow, DuPont Pioneer and BASF.
“Kauai Coffee would have sent some people, but they are at the height of their harvesting, right now,” Kennett said.
Each of the companies provided trucks and Dumpsters to take care of the trash.
“This should have been done a long time ago,” Kennett said. “We found motorcycle frames, car batteries, tires and a lot of nasty stuff. We’ll be doing more of these types of community projects in the future.”
