After finishing on an elapsed sail of 44 minutes, 32 seconds, the Rebel corrected to 36:38 PHRF for top honors in the nine-boat flotilla.
Trinity, with Walter Toerge at the helm, crossed first overall on a 34:25 elapsed sail, corrected to 39:11 PHRF for a sixth place in the PHRF Open class. Trinity also corrected to 30:16 Club for top honors in the class.
The finish order following Rebel’s top spot is clouded following a mishap at the start line, according to Doug Tiffany, NYC Rear Commodore.
Fast Company, with Jim Saylor at the wheel, bumped the stern of OZone, piloted by Dr. Chris Jordan at the start.
The collision resulted in minor damage to the Olson 30s and two protests being filed.
OZone, crossing the line on a 37:02 elapsed sail, corrected to 37:05 PHRF. The protests will be heard sometime this week and could determine final placements.
Bonnie Tiffany moved Bonjolea II off the start and held the lead for most of the race before being taken over by Trinity in the 2.4-mile course in 0 to 8-knot winds from the North Northeast.
Bonjolea II crossed on a 34:54 elapsed sail and corrected to 37:11 PHRF for third place.
Fast Company crossed on a 37:58 elapsed sail and corrected to 38:02 PHRF for fourth place, pending the protest hearing.
Papaau filled in the fifth spot, crossing the line on a 40:01 elapsed sail and correction to 38:18 PHRF followed by Trinity, Speedy (40:54 elapsed, 40:58 PHRF), Weatherly (42:02 elapsed, 42:06 PHRF), and Coyote (52:18 elapsed, 48:59 PHRF).
The Gene Wells Memorial Series is named in honor of the late Gene Wells, a local boat builder from Anahola.
According to RC Tiffancy, there are currently four Gene Wells-built craft in the NYC fleet, including Rebel, Mapuana, White Cap and Serina.
The public is invited to view the second race of the Gene Wells series, Thursday when the NYC Race Committee hoist the first flags starting at 5 p.m.
