LIHUE — Continuing the “Around the World of Plants” lecture series, National Tropical Botanical Garden and Kauai Community College have announced a free public lecture Oct. 1.
In his talk “Decoding DNA,” NTBG’s Dr. John Clark will explain how DNA analysis has changed the way scientists study and conserve plants.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of the KCC Campus Center.
Co-director of Science and Conservation at NTBG, Clark will present examples of DNA’s power to change how we learn about, and even discover, new species with real life scenarios from current research in Hawaii and the tropical Pacific.
Clark will highlight recently discovered plant species from around the Pacific.
“Today, virtually everything we do in the biological sciences is based on our understanding of the building blocks of life — DNA — and botany and conservation are no exceptions,” Clark says. “We use DNA in plants much the same way that medical researchers study cancer or forensic scientists investigate crime scenes.”
“Around the World of Plants” is a collaboration between the NTBG and KCC, which both share a common goal of quality education to truly change lives.
