PUHI — Kauai High School and Waimea High School air riflery squads swept their respective matches Wednesday to open the Kauai Interscholastic Federation season.
Waimea High School, shooting at the Kapaa High School range, collected a day’s high 1196 points for the boys, handily defeating the Warriors who accumulated 772 points from all five of its shooters.
The Waimea girls finished with a day’s high 1150 points, defeating the Kapaa girls who finished with 968 points.
Over at the Island School’s campus in Puhi, the Kauai boys finished with 1176 points, second to the Menehune, overall. The total was sufficient to defeat the Voyager men who collected 933 points.
On the girls’ range, Kauai girls finished with 1071 points, second to the Menehunes, overall, but enough to down the Island School girls who ended with 852 points.
Waimea’s Kayla Ishida (93-71-81-245) and Alexys Bermudez (88-75-82-245) topped the girls’ scoring on the day, each collecting 245 points.
Kapaa’s Marissa Goo stayed close at 231 (70-80-81) points, outscoring Kauai’s top wahine shooter, Emma Leary who finished with 221 (86-79-61) points.
Island School’s top girl shooter finished with 180 (71-63-46) points.
Kauai’s Alec Greer topped the boys’ scoring on the day with 251 (90-83-78) points, followed by Waimea’s Johnw Anthony Pruido who finished with 242 (82-75-85) points.
Island School’s Chad Andrade topped the Voyager boys’ scoring with 237 (85-79-73) points, and Kapaa senior marksman Kalani Murakami topped the Warrior boys’ scoring on 217 (83-56-78) points.
The results of Wednesday’s matches sets the stage for Sept. 18 when Kauai travels to the Hanapepe Armory for a showdown against the hosting Menehune, and Kapaa travels to the Island School campus. Both matches start at 3 p.m.
Last week, Kauai swept the Menehune during the preseason match hosted by Island School and shot under the state tournament format where shooters had two cards, or 20 shots in each position.
This week, the format returned to the more familiar 10 shots in each position.
Waimea boys were led by Pruido followed by Weston Souza (90-76-75-241), Devon Martsell (96-64-80-240), Jaron Parongao (87-70-80-237) and Anthony Daligcon (84-67-85-236). Other Menehune on the line included Kristopher Toma (*-59-73-132), Christian Fostanes (65-44-65-174), Sean Dela Cruz (75-65-80-220).
Kapaa boys were led by Murakami followed by Justin Hatchel (76-52-53-181), Mason Tabura (67-52-54-173), Kahia Kahiwalani (50-34-38-122) and De’vonn Manuel (40-25-14-79).
Greer led the Kauai boys followed by Colby Ihara-Takase (89-86-64-239), Micah Chun (85-75-71-231), Ryker Amimoto (88-77-66-231), Hikari Oberman (90-82-52-224). Other Raider boys on the line included Darian Gerardo (83-81-53-217), Brandon Iida (80-75-42-197), Ryan Valherdi (83-61-44-188).
Andrade topped the Island School boys followed by Micah Kimi (86-63-60-209), Stephen Foster (78-38-84-200), Tanner Tavares (55-50-45-150), and Coleman Jonas (53-52-32-137). Other Voyager boys included Michael Chun (49-45-42-136), Sam Goldberg (31-1-22-54), and Michael McEvoy (74-21-31-126).
Following Ishida and Bermudez, Waimea scoring girls included Grachel Simpson (79-63-80-222), Krisha Esposo (82-66-72-220), and Courtney Guirao (68-71-79-218). Other Menehune girls included Julia Hirano (79-50-52-181), Hope Coyaso (78-47-62-187), Chelsea Samatra (86-46-62-194).
Kapaa girls were led by Goo followed by Shyanne Almarza (78-63-75-216), Annie Ballesteros (44-64-74-182), Brannah Kaleiohi (76-49-50-175), and Skylar Drayna (54-48-62-164). Other Warrior wahine on the line included Sage Watanabe (43-11-18-72), Alohi Chun (16-4-28-48), and Sierra Shigematsu (41-13-2-56).
Following Emma Leary, Kauai girls saw Brooke Hornos (85-70-63-218) and Sara Koide (85-72-61-218) tie. Angel Domingo (78-70-62-210) and Joelle Patricio (79-64-61-204) rounded out the scoring Red Raiders.
Other girls on the line included Meghan Leary (78-66-58-202), Jamie McDermott (80-67-49-196), and Kailee Arakaki (74-52-51-103).
Amanda Nguyen (71-63-46-180) topped the Island School girls’ scoring followed by Ariana Wilson (57-58-61-176), Alex Obert (75-52-45-172), Jessica Raitz (75-66-22-163), and Deanna Slogger (83-47-31-161). Other Voyager girls on the line included Angelique Silvestre (60-52-6-118), Cambra Ort (58-32-26-116), and Julia Flagg (41-37-8-86).
Kauai High School hosts Kapaa on Wednesday while the Voyagers make the trip to the Hanapepe Armory where they will face Waimea. Both matches start at 3 p.m.
