LIHUE — Janet Haffner did not mind the drive into Lihue from Kekaha Saturday morning.
“There weren’t that many cars out there,” Haffner said while having her free glucose screening at the 2013 Summer Bash sponsored by the Kauai Diabetes Today at the Lihue Neighborhood Center. “It wasn’t that busy so I could do this.”
Janice Bond of the East Kauai Lions Club said the Summer Bash is a zone project of the Lions Club, which meant all of the clubs had representatives helping at the day-long wellness event.
In addition to the free glucose screening, patrons could get their blood pressure checked and listen to a variety of presentations.
Norrisa Ahlgren, of Hawaii Pacific Health, coordinator of the recent Wellness Fair, stayed busy distributing literature and fielding questions from the steady stream of people.
Charlyn Nakamine, of the county’s Office of Elderly Affairs, said the agency will be offering a series of “Better Choices, Better Health” workshops on chronic disease self management.
Classes, which run two and a half hours each week for six weeks, are $12 for people 60 years and older and their caregivers, and $40 for those under 60 years old. Dates and times will be announced.
