HANAPEPE — Both the Koloa Redskins and the Kapaa Eagles played to splits Sunday during the Kauai Pop Warner Football League games at Hanapepe Stadium.
Kahanu Davis and Kawelo Huddy each scored two touchdowns to lead Koloa to a 36-6 win over Kekaha on Sunday.
The Koloa Junior Peewee win streak hit a stone wall in Game 2 when the Lihue Patriots Junior Midgets beat them 28-8.
• The Kapaa Eagles JM kept the Hanapepe Colts JM scoreless through nearly three quarters in its 26-6 win.
• Like Koloa, the Eagles’ winning ways stalled when Wailani Kawahalau scored two touchdowns to lead the Hanapepe Colts JPW to a 36-0 shutout.
Here’s a roundup of the action:
• Connor Payomo did the honors on a pair of 1-yard touchdowns and Makai Garrick did the point-after honors with a run-in for the 13-0 Kapaa Eagles MM shutout over Hanapepe in the nightcap.
Payomo found the end zone with 1:27 remaining in the opening quarter and held his second touchdown until the 8:48 mark in the fourth quarter before plowing through the end zone, Garrick adding the point-after for the 13-0 win.
Kawahalau scored the first of four touchdowns in the first quarter to open the Kapaa Eagles JPW scorebooks, Kawahalau running for 27 yards at the 7:51 mark. Nainoa Ragragola kicked the first of three point-after boots for the 8-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, the Eagles JPW struck again, Makoa Vanaman peeling off 47 yards for the score at the 6:26 mark. Ragragola booted his second PAT for the 16-0 margin.
With 2:25 showing in the first period, Kawahalau added his second score, a 32-yard run with Ragragola getting his third PAT for the 24-0 margin.
Sean Mullikin was called on with 40 ticks remaining in the first quarter, Mullikin finding the end zone at the end of a 42-yard run.
With 2:14 left in the game, Kapaa scored its final TD, a 1-yard charge by Kaimana Harris for the 36-0 final.
• Koloa Redskins JPW opened its series on a winning note, scoring three touchdowns in the second period en route to a 36-6 final over the Kekaha Titans JPW.
Davis kept the pigskin for the first score, an 8-yard run, with 2:36 showing in the opening quarter.
Following the failed point-after, Kekaha Titans answered in spectacular fashion when Jensen Battulayan peeled off 77 yards, the longest run of the day, for a touchdown at the 8:36 mark to deadlock the contest, 6-6.
Koloa broke the stalemate with two scores in the final three minutes of the first half, Huddy breaking out for a 31-yard score at the 2:43 mark and gracing the score with a point-after boot for the 14-6 lead.
Less than a minute later, Davis picked up his second score, a 36-yard run, at the 2:09 mark, Huddy doing the PAT boot for the 22-6 lead.
Koloa was not done on defense as Malachi Silva stripped the ball and ran it back 45 yards for touchdown with 1:38 showing in the half.
Wade Puimsaguan did the point-after run for the 29-6 reading at the break.
Huddy iced the Koloa victory with his final touchdown, a 3-yard charge, coming at the 4:36 mark. Sabbath Seibert ran in the PAT for the 36-6 final.
• Fighting a running clock, Koloa Redskins JM got a score in the final 8:54 when Elijah Asano hit Keola Baclayon on a 19-yard scoring pass. Kameron Parbo did the PAT boot for the 28-8 final.
Earlier, Bryceson Abigania ran for two touchdowns, a 21-yard score and a 30-yard touchdown run, to lead the Lihue Patriots JM.
Aukai Albao put the Patriots on the board early in the opening quarter, breaking out for a 58-yard score and Noah Tangalin adding the PAT boot for the 8-0 read.
Abigania added two scores, a 21-yard run with 5:01 showing in the first quarter and a 3-yard run with 6:58 showing in the second quarter for the 20-0 lead.
Christian Manera found the hole for a 23-yard touchdown with 1:18 showing in the half, Tangalin adding the PAT boot which triggered the running clock.
• The Kapaa Eagles JM won 26-6 win.
Kalena Harder capped the Eagles opening drive with a 38-yard touchdown at the 7:17 mark with Ekolu Rivera adding the point-after boot for the 8-0 lead.
Rivera had his opportunity to shine, tapping paydirt on a 5-yard scoring run on the last play of the first quarter for the 14-0 margln.
Coming off the break, Kapaa’s Raven Cummings pushed for two yards and the score at the 6:32 mark, Naikoa Simao of Hanapepe blocking the PAT for the 20-0 lead.
Hanapepe prevented the shutout in the final 55 ticks of the third quarter when Lanakila Gushiken-Banquel found paydirt at the end of an 11-yard run for the 20-6 reading at the end of three quarters.
Kapaa Eagles JM iced the win in the fourth quarter when Teili Fonua found Dusten Ramseyer-Burdett on a 7-yard scoring pass with 8:23 left in the game.
Hanapepe’s Gushiken-Banquel blocked the point-after for the 26-6 final.
• This weekend, the Kauai Pop Warner Football League travels to the Faye Field in Kekaha for a dose of old-time up-close football when the Kekaha Titans host the Lihue Patriots Mitey Mites in an 8 a.m. opener Saturday.
The Titans JPW host the Patriots JPW in the 10 a.m. kickoff.
“This is just one way the KPWFL shows its support for the town of Kekaha who earlier in the year, struggled to put together a JPW team,” said KPWFL commissioner Teddy Arroyo. “We want people to come out and enjoy some old-fashioned, up-close football while supporting the Kekaha program by enjoying the food booth.”
The Kekaha special games preface the KPWFL islandwide cheer competition which takes place Sunday at the Clem Gomes Gym at the Waimea High School campus.
Doors open at 2 p.m. with the first competition getting underway at 2:45 p.m.
