KILAUEA — Kauai’s federal wildlife refuge will open today with the temporary agreement to end the government shutdown in effect since Tuesday.
A recording on the Kauai National Wildlife Complex phone states that the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge including the Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse; the Hanalei NWR and Huliea NWR near the Menehune Fish Pond in Lihue, would all reopen today between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Although Kauai does not have a national park, the wildlife refuge areas are maintained by the U.S. Department of the Interior and were subject to closing for the duration of the government shutdown.
Signs had been posted at the gates of the popular destination stating the grounds were closed for the duration of the shutdown. Visitors were limited to taking photographs of the historic from the lookout point above near the gates.
