LIHUE — Kapaa and Kauai high school air riflery teams won their respective matches to end a competitive Kauai Interscholastic Federation season Thursday.
Led by senior Kalani Murakami, who finished with 227 points (86 prone, 81 kneeling and 60 standing), the Kapaa boys amassed 1,053 points to Island School’s 994.
On the girls’ arena, Kapaa’s Shyanne Almarza had high-point honors on the Warriors’ home range with 243 (82-81-80),including the highest point total in the standing position at Kapaa, considered to be the most difficult position, to lead the Warrior wahine to a team 1,083 points to Island School’s 970 points.
At the Kauai High School range, home to the 2013 KIF boys and girls champions, Micah Chun shot a 249 (90 prone-76 standing-83 kneeling) to lead the boys, earning the KIF title earlier in the season, to 1,216 points to Waimea’s 1,172 points.
Brooke Hornos rebounded to high-point status, finishing with a 250 (93-81-76) to lead the Red Raider girls to an 1,182 point finish, just six points ahead of Waimea girls who tallied 1,176 points.
“It was a great and very competitive season amongst ourselves and other teams,” said Marcela Hornos, the scorekeeper for Kauai High School.
“We have seen scores never before recorded by our team.”
The competitive edge was clearly demonstrated by Waimea’s top shooter, Anthony Daligcon who finished the day at 250 (90-74-86), exchanging leads with Chun by falling two points shy in the standing position, but rebounding to a three-point advantage in the kneeling position for an overall one-point advantage at the final buzzer.
Following Chun, Kauai got 244 (93-76-83) from Darian Gerardo.
Hikari Oberman (89-73-80-242), Colby Ihara-Takase (91-63-87-241) and Ryker Amimoto (89-65-86-240) rounded out the scoring Red Raider boys.
Other Raiders on the firing line included Alec Greer (90-62-75-227), Ryan Valhuerdi (86-53-72-211) and Bryson Chun (82-58-64-204).
Following Daligcon on the Waimea range, Jaron Parongao (86-74-87-247), John Anthony Prado (85-70-76-231), Weston Souza (85-59-84-228) and Kristopher Toma (80-68-68-216) made up the team scoring marksmen.
Other Menehune on the line included Devon Hartsell (85-57-63-205), Zayin Minia (71-44-72-187) and Ariel Soliva (60-34-421-136).
On the girls’ range, Jamie McDermott (78-75-88-241), filled in the No. 2 spot behind Brooke. Joelle Patricio (88-67-83-238) filled in the No. 3 spot followed by Emma Leary (80-76-75-231) and Sara Koide (84-55-83-222).
Other Kauai girls on the line included Meghan Leary (75-72-68-215), Krystle Pascua (82-59-74-215) and Angel Irish Doming (80-56-84-220).
Quiana Duarte set the pace for the Waimea girls, ending the day with a 241 (85-73-83) followed by Kayla Ishida (91-71-74-236), Chelsea Samatra (88-59-88-235), Melia Takakusagi (89-66-79-234) and Alexys Bermudez (85-67-78-230).
Other Waimea girls on the firing line included Cristina McLaughlin (72-57-60-189), Krisha Esposo (84-57-76-217) and Courtney Guirao (80-64-80-224).
Following Murakami at the Kapaa range, the Warriors got 224 (86-74-64) from Mason Tabura followed by Joven Gouvera (86-76-61-223), Justin Harchell (78-67-63-208) and De’vonn Manuel (70-65-36-171).
Kahia Kahiwalani (70-63-34-167) was the alternate Warrior on the line.
Micah Kimi (86-82-59-227) finished tied with Murakami for the top spot in the Island School Voyager line. He was followed by Chad Andrade (81-75-68-224), Tanner Tavares (78-73-40-191), Sam Goldberg (72-54-52-178) and Michael Chung (79-67-28-174).
Other Voyager boys on the line included Coleman Jonas (88-32-27-147), Daniel Wu (50-49-8-107) and Stephen Foster (80-41-47-168).
Following Almarza on the winning Kapaa girls’ team, Marissa Goo posted a 248 (89-82-77-248) followed by Breannah Kalaohi (83-82-67-232), Keisha Aki (73-63-47-183) and Chun Alohilani (53-76-48-177).
Other Warrior wahine on the line included Annie Ballesteros (55-59-61-175), Rachel Apana (63-44-34-141) and Sage Watanabe (73-51-49-173).
Ashley Sylvestre (74-74-78-226) topped the Island School girls followed by Amanda Nguyen (84-69-50-203), Ariana Wilson (68-66-51-185), Alex Obert (72-63-47-182) and Lauren Olke (85-60-29-174).
Other Voyager women on the line included Angelique Sylvestre (50-60-32-142), Deanna Sloger (69-60-34-163) and Cambria Ort (42-39-22-103).
With the conclusion of the KIF air riflery season, Kauai High School boys and girls teams will head to the Civilian Marksmanship Program/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Air Riflery Championships on Oct. 29 at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall in Honolulu.
Marcela Hornos said the winning teams will be made up of four shooters for each team. A fifth marksman, determined by highest score, will accompany each team.
