Papaau, by virtue of its third place finish Thursday, broke the three-way tie for third place overall in the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Gene Wells Memorial Series.

That said, OZone broke away early from the pack and locked up first place in the final race, crossing on an elapsed sail of 44 minutes, 54 seconds, and correcting to 44:58 PHRF.
The first-place finish was just its second in the seven-race series and the crew, led by Chris Jordan, finished with 10 points, two points behind Fast Company.
“We had eight boats start,” said Sharon Gibson of the NYC Race Committee. “Because some of the boats’ approach to the start line and consequent right-of-way rules, three of the boats were forced to the outside of the pin-end and had to turn back to start properly.”
Gibson said OZone was not involved in the starting line melee and got off to a great start, remaining way ahead of the fleet for the three laps.
The Olson 30 piloted by Jim Saylor crossed second in the light winds of five to 10 knots from the East-Northeast, tripping the clocks at 55:22 elapsed and correcting to 55:27 PHRF.
The second-place finish did not alter its overall standings, Fast Company finishing the series with eight points and first place after pocketing four first finishes in the seven-race series.
Papaau, finishing with four third-place finishes settled in the third-place overall standings after crossing on a 1:01:24 elapsed sail and correcting to 58:47 PHRF.
Speedy followed with a 1:00:07 PHRF finish despite crossing the finish line ahead of Papaau on a 1:00:01 elapsed sail.
Weatherly followed on a 1:03:05 elapsed sail, correcting to 1:03:11 PHRF with Trinity, an F-28 trimaran, crossing on a 1:01:30 elapsed sail and correcting to 1:10:01 PHRF.
Two of the eight boats, Coyote and Mapuana, elected to take a “Did Not Finish” due to the failing light.
Gibson said the final race of the Gene Wells Memorial Series ends the sailing calendar for 2013 with the only race remaining coming on Nov. 1 when the NYC membership celebrates Halloween with boat theme costumes and individual costumes for the post-race party.
