LIHUE — The Kauai High School girls bowling team rolled a three-game 1,809 pinfall Thursday, but finished tied with Kapaa at the Kauai Bowl.
Led by Jaffia Ballesteros, who led the Red Raider ladies with high games of 133 and 132, the Kauai girls finished with a second, third, and first place over the three-game match for nine points in the standings.
The nine points tied with Kapaa, who got high rolls from Angelika Questin, the current individual girl bowler with a 167 average over nine games.
Questin rolled a high game of 176 in the first game, and added rolls of 157 and 158 in games two and three to lead the Kapaa girls who finished with a first place and two second places for nine points in the night on a 1,785 team pinfall.
Waimea, getting an evening high from Selena Perez-Suniga at 185 in game two, finished with a team 1,690 pinfall and two third places and a first place for six points.
Perez-Suniga, getting the nod as the female individual bowler for the state tournament, had the high roll for the girls in the evening in game two where the Menehune wahine earned first place.
Joining Ballesteros (133, 144, 132), Kauai got contributions from Jaden DeCosta-Caalim (126, 102, 161), Frances Morden (118, 130, 93), Melissa Rapozo (112, -, 98), Janice Purisima (124, 93, -), and Geneva Dela Cruz (-, 106, 137).
Following Questin (176, 157, 158), Kapaa got contributions from Annie Ballesteros (129, 95, 108), Kristen Yam (106, 99, 94), Amanda Thayer (131, 125, -), Keisha Aki (115, 106, -), Frances Nono (-,-,96), and Hiilani Bacon (-,-,90).
Perez-Suniga topped the Waimea girls with rolls of 130, 185, and 147 followed by Diane Gawaran (115, 136, 128), Maisie Sagucio (119, 109, 91), Lixie Villanueva (103, 91, 105), Christina Corpuz (87,-,71), and Janezka Esposo (-,73,-).
Kapaa girls, earning the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls title earlier in the year, finished the year with 4.5 points followed by Kauai at 1.5 points and Waimea with no points.
Following Questin in individual averages, Perez-Suniga finishes the season in second with a 155 average followed by Hazel Jarquio at 144.444 average, Jaffia Ballesteros at 141 DeCosta-Caalim at 138 at the top of the leaderboard.
Kauai’s Ian Luis, currently the boys individual leader at 207 average over nine games, rolled just one game, 134 in game three, and the Kauai boys settled for a 2,011 pinfall over three games, just a pin ahead of Waimea who finished with a 2,010 pinfall.
Both teams tied for second place with seven points at the end of the night.
Jorge Ho of Kapaa rolled games of 161, 148 and 179 to lead the Warrior boys to a 2,047 pinfall and 10 points for first place.
Ho got help from Caleb Keohohou (175, 102, 139), Mark Walten (170, 139, 104), Devonn Manuel (164, -, 153), Kanei Alisna-Kolo (139, -,-), Colton Christensen (-,101,-), Ethan Whatmore (-,88,-), and Jalen Yago (-,-,85).
Kauai High School boys, earning the KIF boys title earlier in the year, finished by splitting its forces, five boys rolling the first two games and five boys rolling the third game.
Kelii Alcos (147, 170, -), Andrew Cruz (122, 138, -), Douglas Nobriga (128, 85, -), Raycyn Aviguetero (134, 82, -), Reggie Mones (124, 92, -) took the first two games.
Christian Iloreta (-,-,129), Brandon Agas (-,-,182), Reggie Mones (-,-,147), D.J. Alao (-,-,197) and Luis (-,-,134) finished the night.
Chase Ueno, earning the boys individual spot for the state tournament, topped the Menehune bowl on rolls of 165, 164, and 133. Ueno sits in the No. 2 spot for the boys individual average with a 182 below Luis.
Ueno got help from Kalei Nakaya (141, 143, 111), Patrick Cowell (156, 123, 126), Gilson Guillermo (144, 144, 136), Justin Silva (116, -, 125), and Nathan Gallagher (-,84,-).
Following Luis and Ueno in the boys individual averages, D.J. Alao is in the No. 3 spot with a 175 average followed by Ho at 171, and Keohohou at 166 filling in the top five spots.
The KIF champion Kapaa girls, Kauai boys, Perez-Suniga and Ueno will participate in the Billy Tees Hawaii High School Athletic Association Bowling championships, Oct. 29 through Nov. 1 at the Hickam Air Force Base on Oahu.
