LIHUE — Kyler Cabebe, 8, said he’s been riding a bicycle “since forever.”
The 8-year-old Elsie Wilcox Elementary School student was one of several young people taking advantage of the free bicycle clinic hosted by the East Kauai Lions Club in partnership with the Kauai Path.
“We’re going to teach you how to ride mo’ bettah,” said Dr. Randy Blake of the Kauai Path.
And there’s more classes ahead.
Blake said Kauai Path is hosting two events geared to raise awareness of bicycling.
The first is a free adult class, “Bicycling Traffic Skills 101,” which will be held Saturday in the state’s vector control building behind the Department of Water in Pua Loke.
Designed for youth over 14 years old, the class is limited to 15 individuals and will offer bicyclists improved bike handling skills and basic bicycle maintenance, including how to fix a flat tire.
Blake said in addition to better bike handling skills and maintenance, bicyclists will get a road test on the new bike lanes established on Kaumualii Highway fronting the Kukui Grove Center.
The awareness is not limited to bicyclists. Blake said Saturday afternoon, Kauai Path is hosting a gathering of the county’s transit drivers on how to navigate through the new highway lanes.
“This is the first of two instructional meetings for the county drivers,” Blake said. “There needs to be awareness on the part of drivers on how to move safely between the new lanes. We’re starting with the people who provide public transit.”
The East Kauai Lions Club has been hosting the free bicycle clinics for at least 10 years.
Bicyclists are encouraged to register online by visiting www.kauaipath.org, and on Saturday are encouraged to bring a helmet, bicycle in good working condition, a lunch, and water bottle.
