LIHUE — A full plate of options await those in search of something more than family, food and football in the comfort of their own homes on Thanksgiving.
In fact, there is even a chance to burn calories — and guilt — prior to the big feast.
The 2013 Kapaa Turkey Trot begins at 7:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving at Kapaa Beach Park.
Check-in for the free, informal 5K, 10K fun walk, run or bike ride along the multi-use path begins at 6:45 a.m. Participants are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items.
But free turkey dinners will be offered Wednesday and Thursday in celebration of the holiday, too.
The Salvation Army of Kauai will host free Thanksgiving luncheons at two locations on the island.
The 51st annual Thanksgiving luncheon is from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue and another one beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Hanapepe Corps, next to the Hanapepe Neighborhood Center and Hanapepe Stadium.
“The meal is for anyone who would enjoy a wonderful meal including turkey, stuffing, gravy and all the fixings,” said Major Mario Reyes of The Salvation Army. “Come early and enjoy the lively entertainment.”
The annual community Thanksgiving luncheon traditionally launches The Salvation Army’s holiday programs.
Free meals are also offered up on Thursday.
A holiday luncheon, hosted by the Kapaa Interfaith Association, will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church Gymnasium in Kapaa.

Also on Thursday, the Bhakti Yoga Shack in Anahola will host a Thanksgiving Celebration beginning at 5:30 p.m. Enjoy a vegan celebration with interactive singing meditation to sacred Kirtan world music.
Participants are asked to bring a vegan dish to share.
