LIHUE — Afternoon rains did little to dampen the Halloween spirit as hundreds of ghouls, goblins, fairies, and superheroes converged Thursday afternoon.
An age group Halloween costume contest hosted by the KQNG Radio Group and a Halloween screaming contest set the stage for the massive trick-or-treating canvassing of the mall.
The lure of the Aloha Dance Studio haunted house and carnival type Halloween games unfolded for the last time after operating throughout the month as Freaky Fridays and Spooktacular Saturdays, a “fun raiser” for the dance studio headed by Tiffany Dodge.
Kaylee Alapai screamed her way to the top spot of one of the age group costume contests after earlier winning a cache of prizes in the screaming contest.
Karli Labanon played on the “Laura” theme, appearing as a packaged Draculaura doll and almost instantly winning the heart of KQNG Radio’s Ron Wiley.
Andy Melamed, coming off the Westin Princeville Ocean View Resort’s presentation to the Kauai Lifeguard Association, filled in one of the judge’s seats, sometimes abandoning his chair to help Wiley in tie-breaking winners.
Jonell Kaohelaulii, Kukui Grove marketing manager, said with Halloween done, the mall is looking ahead to an exciting holiday season.
“Our First Friday programs were primarily for the summer,” Kaohelaulii said. “Now that school is in full swing, we want to keep the event youth-oriented.”
