Kelii “Pretty Boy” Alcos of the Kauai Police Activities League Boxing Club is the Hawaii state title holder in the 14-15 year old, 95-pound division.
In addition to the state title, Alcos, a sophomore at Kauai High School, earned the “Outstanding Boxer of the Tournament” following his unanimous decision over Dalis Kaleiopu of the Waianae Boxing Club during the Hawaii State Silver Gloves Championship on Oahu Saturday at the Wahiawa Park Gymnasium.
“Kelii demonstrated the sweet science of boxing for three beautiful rounds,” said Mark Ozaki, a K-PAL boxing coach. “He was resembling the skills of current World Champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. The difference is Kelii is more humble and is without the arrogance.”
Ozaki said Alcos was so slick and elusive the only time he got hit in the entire bout was an unintentional blow, which was thrown following the bell at the second round.
“Kelii shrugged the late blow and both boxers touched gloves displaying mutual respect and sportsmanship,” Ozaki said.
Following his unanimous decision win, Alcos said he wants to thank all of his sparring partners at the K-PAL Lihue stable and the Hanapepe Boxing Gyms, including Jesse “The Punisher” Cardinas Raralio, Kristopher “The Real Deal” Alcos, Franci Davila, Domenick Ansagay, Hazard McDougal, Treydon Miguel and Jasmine Benham for getting him ready for the state championships.
Ozaki said Kelii’s father and co-team coach, Darren Alcos, had Kelii and the other K-PAL boxers doing extra drills outside of the gym, giving the K-PAL boxers an advantage in the ring.
Coming on the heels of the Silver Gloves, Ozaki said the Alcos brothers, Kelii and Kristopher, will be competing side-by-side for a spot on Team USA at the Junior World Championships in Reno, Nev., in January, 2014.
From there, Kelii will be attempting to earn a spot at the National Silver Gloves Championship at the Regional Silver Gloves Championships in Pasadena, Calif.
Following the Mainland tour, all K-PAL boxers will be in action at the First Honolulu PAL vs. Kauai PAL Invitational Tournament on Oahu in February, 2014.
Ozaki said the Silver Gloves Championships is the sister tournament to the prestigious Golden Gloves and Junior Golden Gloves Championships, the Silver Glove handling athletes from 8 to 15 years old, the Junior Golden Gloves taking in youth 16 and 17 years old and the Golden Gloves showcasing youth 18 to 34 years old.
