LIHUE — The Kapolei Hurricanes girls basketball team came to Kauai and swept its three-game series over Kauai’s high schools.
Starting Thursday, the Hurricanes took the Waimea Menehune, 53-33 before moving to the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa Friday for a 34-22 win over the Lady Warriors.
The series wrapped up Saturday evening when Kapolei soared to a 48-22 win over the Kauai Red Raiders.
Raquel Lasconia set the pace for Kapolei, scoring in double-digits in each of the games, 16 against Waimea, 13 against Kapaa and closing with 10 points against Kauai, all 10 coming in the first three quarters, with six digits being nailed in the third quarter.
Kapaa proved to be the most effective defender against the Hurricanes, holding the Division I team to just a 12-point margin after trailing by eight points at the half.
Sati Helenihi set the pace for Kapolei against Kapaa, draining a three-ball to lead the Hurricanes to a 10-4 lead after the first quarter.
Kapaa answered the call with buckets from Maile Tuttle and Shyanne Almarza.
Kapaa, being held to single digit scoring through the entire game, got its most productive period in the fourth, Tori Daligcon scoring all of her game-total six points in the second half, four coming in the fourth quarter when Kapaa outscored the Hurricanes, 8-4.
Daligcon led the Warrior scoring followed by Tuttle with five points, Almarza and Ariel Cummings each finishing with four and Sierra Shigematsu getting a second-period bucket.
Lasconia topped the Kapolei scoring with 11 points, including a three-ball.
Amalyia Dycus added seven points, including three buckets, Kaitlyn Lanier ending with five points, Helenihi getting a three-ball and Devan Fenmumiai adding a bucket.
Against Waimea, Dycus followed Lasconia in scoring with 13 points followed by Kela Whitehurst adding seven, Dashia Carter and Lanier each with six points. Tylanna White and Helenihi ended with a pair each and a digit from Samantha Erlava rounding out the victory.
Following a 13-30 deficit at the half, Waimea came back and stayed close, 23-20, led by Nicole Palacio and Tianalee Apilado dropping three-balls in the fourth period.
Saturday, the Hurricanes took on the Red Raiders who operated under the auspices of the Kauai Junior Varsity coaches because of prior commitments from its head coaches.
Coming from a 31-3 halftime deficit, the Red Raiders outgunning Kapolei in the second half, 19-17 led by Monique Tomacder who exploded for her game-total six points in the final frame.
Ashley Lucas, finishing with four points, hit the buckets in the second half along with Sierra Fernandez who got her three points in the final period, and Malyssa Manera, getting her three points in the second half.
