Caitlyn Cantorna scored the only goal in an intense physical soccer game on Wednesday against Kapaa at Vidinha Stadium.
The goal, which came with 18 minutes left in the game from the deep right pocket, gave Kauai High School a 1-0 edge over Kapaa High School.
“It was a well-fought game,” said Kauai coach Kevin Devitt. “It was just lucky we came out on top. The game could have gone either way because Kapaa had its chances to score.”
Both teams battled from the onset to a 0-0 deadlock at the half. Kauai showed a bit more of an advantage in controlling the ball but was unable to score before an audience of several hundred people who huddled in the biting cold winds.
Kapaa adjusted during the break and the Warrior wahine came out with a better passing game, making more trips into Raider country.
On a battle for ball control midfield, Kauai’s Cantorna won the ball and sprinted down the wing with a Kapaa defender hot on her tail.
Settling in the corner, Cantorna fired and the ball was juggled by the Kapaa goalkeeper before being dropped and settled into the folds.
Kapaa came back and had an opportunity to tie late in the game when a breakaway from the corner missed, but with a forward backing the play Kapaa took another shot which was deflected by a Kauai defender before the whistle sounded.
“I’m pleased with how the girls are coming along,” Devitt said. “We didn’t have a pre-season, so we’re adjusting along the way, and the girls are doing well. We were lucky, today. Kapaa will be coming back strong on the next meeting so this is far from over.”
With Island Schools’ 4-0 win over Waimea, Tuesday afternoon, there should be parity in the Kauai Interscholastic Federation League and every game becomes important, Devitt said.
Madison Moore did the honors for the Voyagers and scored a hat trick, which is three goals scored, in the first 10 minutes of play on Tuesday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Moore outran the Menehune defense and opened the scorebooks three minutes into the game after taking a pass from about 30 yards out.
Five minutes into the game, Moore struck again after outrunning the defense and fired off from the rightside. Her third goal came four minutes later from point-blank range.
Following a defensive match through the remainder of the game, Cambria Ort put the final point on the board on a booming kick into the wind from about 25 yards out.
The wind got the ball, held it above the goalkeeper’s outstretched arms before the ball slipped just under the crossbars with less than two minutes left in the game for the 4-0 victory.
Following Wednesday’s games, Kauai girls hold a 2-0 record, while Kapaa drops to 1-1. Island School, with its win over Waimea on Tuesday, sits at 1-1 while the Menehune are 0-2.
Following an 11-0 win over Waimea on Saturday, the Kapaa junior varsity suffered a 4-0 loss at the hands of Kauai’s JV. The win was led by Aeigha Scovel who netted goals at the ninth and 47th minutes.
Lyndsie Kashima added a goal in the 12th minute followed by Railee Layosa scoring in the 16th minute.
The KIF soccer season will feature six games on Saturday when the boys enter the arena.
