LIHUE — About $20,000 was collected at the Kokua for Philippines program Sunday at the Kukui Grove Center,
Helping fill the coffers, volunteers offered silent auctions and special T-shirt sales during the entertainment-filled afternoon.
Portugal said about $6,000 has been raised through the money boxes placed around the island through the efforts of the Kauai Visayan Club. Falko Partners has donated $10,000.
Marynel Valenzuela, president of the Kauai Filipino Chamber of Commerce, said in addition to the efforts, the Kauai Filipino Humanitarian Society was soliciting online pledges.
Organizers said the money boxes marked “Kokua” are located around the island with proceeds being sent to authorized nonprofit ors assisting with disaster relief in the Philippines and matched dollar-for-dollar by the Consuelo Foundation up to $2 million.
Alan Villaflor, coordinator of a Thanksgiving Day Zumba event, said there was a small turnout, but all funds are earmarked for the Consuelo Foundation as well.
The Kauai Filipino Chamber of Commerce has also pledged to match donations raised up to $1,000.
The Kauai Filipino Humanitarian Society is also accepting vendor applications to its Bayanihan Craft Fair, Dec. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.
Advance tickets to the Boogie Night are $15, or $20 at the door, and people can call 639-7507 for both the craft applications, or tickets.
