Individuals, couples and families are facing financial troubles this holiday season and could use some help.
Hector and his wife are raising two kids and taking care of their mother-in-law at the same time. Hector’s wife does not work because of her language barrier. Hector is working as a dishwasher and is struggling to support a family of five. He has difficulty catching up with bills. He always needs a ride from his friend and he does not have a cell phone. They live with very minimal needs.
Sam, 67, was homeless and living in a shack. He has a very difficult time breathing. He received help from community agencies and Kauai Economic Opportunity, Inc., and now has sustainable housing. One of Sam’s goals is to gain some weight. He is very thin. Some meals and good conversation would help brighten Sam’s day and remind him he is not alone. A few good meals or gas for his car would really help him or a coupon for an oil exchange at a local service station would be a help.
Hector and his family, as well as Sam, are some of the people who will receive assistance through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
The Garden Island

Help for single mom
Tara, 41, is a single mom with one child. The two were being sheltered by a relative after they were forced to leave their home because of domestic disturbances when the child’s father was living with them. The transitional arrangement was coming to an end because the family at the residence needed the room for their growing family. Tara was able to secure a sustainable residence with the help from a housing program. Any help with toys, clothing, backpack or briefcase, as Tara is attending college now, would be helpful and bring them joy at this time of year.
Reduced wages hamper holiday
Jason is a single parent who is now working part time. Reduced wages have made it difficult to pay the rent and he has received an eviction notice from his landlord. He is now trying to look for additional work and a new place to live. He would appreciate any help at this time for him and his daughter. Clothes, accessories for his daughter, food and shoes would be a great gift for the family.
