His identity has not been released.
The crash occurred at around 11 p.m. on Koloa Road. According to the Kauai Police Department, the man had been traveling north on Ala Kalanikaumaka, when he apparently failed to stop at a stop sign before turning left onto Koloa Road. While making the turn, the man’s vehicle was struck by a Nissan pickup truck that was headed east on Koloa Road.
The victim’s GMC pickup truck was engulfed in flames by the time officers arrived, according to a county press release. Officers and firefighters extracted the victim and extinguished the fire. The man was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The male driver was the sole occupant of the GMC pickup at the time of the collision.
The 24-year-old female driver of the Nissan pickup and her four-year-old son were also transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. The female driver was treated for minor injuries, but the child, who was in a safety seat at the time, was not injured.
The collision is under investigation.
An autopsy of the victim is pending.
This is Kauai’s third fatal crash in as many weeks, and the sixth traffic fatality in 2013.
