KAPAA — Mary Lardizabal, the music director at Kapaa Middle School, said they were collecting glass for more than two years.
“A lot of credit should go to Sushi Bushido who kept glass for the students,” Lardizabal said.
“This is the glass which went into the Kapaa roundabout beautification project.”
On Monday Bob Bartolo of the Kapaa Business Association invited representatives of the major contributors to view the completed project at the Kapaa roundabout, the tour being punctuated by honks from passing motorists circling the traffic-calming device.
Funded through grants from the State Department of Transportation Enhancement Program through its Landscaping and Scenic Beautification category, Bartolo said the project cost was in the neighborhood of $20,000.
The project was also eligible for federal assistance of up to 80 percent of the project cost.
The Kapaa Business Association, a Kauai Recycling Solid Waste grant, and the Rotary Club of Kapaa each contributed $1,000 towards the project which got started back in 2010.
Kauai Nursery and Landscaping contributed the design for the roundabout, which included the use of colored recycled glass symbolizing the ocean where turtles and porpoises created by Clayworks at Kilohana swim.
