Two millennia ago on an ever so sacred night, a baby was born who would forever change the course of human history. There was no room at any inn for his sweet mother to lie down on a soft bed as she labored — as all mothers do at such a time. The Son of God was to be born among the lowliest of creatures.
For years before the event occurred, men and women of devout faith had been praying earnestly for that day when the Savior would come to Earth. Yet, when that long-promised and prophesied day finally arrived, many who had so fervently prayed now peacefully slept, with a knowledge of the night’s events hidden from them for years to come.
Across the world, others would wake in the morning to a day much like the one before, unaware then, or perhaps throughout their lives, that this day would change their lives forever.
In Jerusalem, Herod, Pontius Pilate and multitudes of those who would one day occupy center stage in the grandest of all events now slumbered, wholly ignorant of the magnificent drama unfolding around them.
Yet there were many whose humble hearts were so tuned to the spirit that when they woke they knew that their God had come to Earth! The long-awaited day was here! Angels in heaven shouted and sang with unrestrained joy!
Brilliant stars now exploded in extraordinary majesty! He was here, the redeemer and Savior of the world, the King of Kings. Immanuel. Shiloh. Jehovah. Jesus Christ! His birth had been foretold since Adam walked the Earth. Without ceasing, from that wondrous night until this very moment, countless have been those who have born solemn testimony of the reality of his birth.
From the humble shepherds privileged to see and touch the babe of Mary, to prophets gifted from on high with sacred knowledge, to millions of ordinary men and women whose souls have been touched by the Holy Ghost to know of a certainty of the reality of that night.
Today that babe of Bethlehem is now the Christ, the resurrected Savior and redeemer of the world. He pleads with us, “draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you, seek me diligently and ye shall find me.”
It is our sacred life’s duty to earnestly seek him, and be not as the slumbering fools of ancient days who knew nothing of that miraculous birth. It is Christmas. He is always here to be found! His spirit permeates the very air around us. He is in our music and in the laughter and smiles of those we love. He is in our hearts as well as our homes.
Let there be room in our “inns” and not forget whose birthday we now celebrate. He doesn’t need a new tie or cookies, he needs us to know him and to love him. He is Jesus Christ. Of this I so humbly testify.
