Mililani, a Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I team, comes to Kauai for four games starting Friday.
“These should be really good games,” said Martin Steinhaus, the Kauai High School boys junior varsity coach, Sunday. “The Kauai High School boys just finished three pre-season games on Oahu where they finished 2-1, suffering its only loss to Kalaheo High School, 5-1.”
Steinhaus said Kauai varsity boys did well in the first half, holding the Mustangs to just two goals at the break. But Kalaheo came back with three goals in the second half to spoil Kauai’s opener for the Oahu trip.
The Red Raider boys, under coaches Mark Brandeburg and Cody Kimura took the fields, Saturday for a 3-2 edge over Kahuku High School and a 2-1 win over Waialua High School.
The Mililani Trojans, top seeded in the HHSAA state finals for Division I, fell to the Kalani Falcons, 2-1 in overtime in its first match, Marcus White of Kalani getting the go-ahead in the 90th minute.
Both teams were equally matched, playing defense until the final minutes when Chris Galang put Mililani on the boards in the 71st minute. Steve Teshima answered for Kalani, two minutes later.
Mililani will open its Kauai series with a double-header, Friday afternoon starting at 2 p.m. when it meets Island School at Vidinha Stadium, according to a schedule provided by Joe McEvoy, a Kauai Interscholastic Federation soccer official.
Following Island School, the Trojans will take on the Kapaa Warriors, defending Kauai Interscholastic Federation champions and the HHSAA state champions for Division II, at 4 p.m.
During the state Division II championship, Kapaa got goals from Tanner Henry and Michael Alonzo to beat Mid Pacific Institute, 2-1, the victory coming in the first half.
Kauai High School will open against Mililani starting at 10 a.m., Saturday at Vidinha Stadium where four games will be played.
Following Kauai High School boys, the Waimea boys will take on Mililani in its final appearance.
The KIF girls soccer teams take the field starting at 2:15 when the Waimea junior varsity girls take on Kapaa JV followed by the varsity Waimea girls going up against the Kapaa girls starting at 4 p.m.
The Kauai High School girls travel to Island School for a single game against the Voyagers starting at 10 a.m.
KIF varsity paddlers will open the season, Saturday with the three-mile race up Wailua River starting at 9 a.m.
