LIHUE — A high surf warning for the north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau is in effect from 12 a.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Friday. Surf of 40- to 50-feet is expected on the north-facing shores of the islands. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that surf will build rapidly starting before midnight tonight on Kauai and Niihau, and will remain above the warning level through Thursday night and may persist above the advisory level through Friday.
All north shore beaches, from Anahola to Kee Beach, will be closed tomorrow morning until further notice.
Expect extreme, giant breaking surf, large shore breaks, and dangerous currents. It could be extremely dangerous to approach the shoreline in these areas. Significant coastal inundation and property damage is possible.
Coastal residents should take measures to protect property and monitor information from emergency personnel for possible evacuation orders. Due to the very dangerous conditions and the possibility of road closures, avoid travel near the coastline in the affected areas. Mariners should be prepared for the possibility of damage to harbor facilities and for harbors becoming inaccessible due to large breaking waves.
