PUHI — Ansen Davis of Koloa said the Kauai Community College experience is new to him.
“I’m majoring in automotive, but have yet to take any automotive classes,” Davis said on Monday, the first day of class for the spring semester. “I’m still taking care of the basics.”
KCC opened its doors to the spring semester with an increase in both student headcount and semester hours, said Earl Nishiguchi, KCC vice chancellor of student affairs.
“We’re one of three community colleges in the University of Hawaii system to post an increase in student headcount,” Nishiguchi said.
The other two colleges are the Windward CC and the Leeward CC.
Based on unofficial census taken Monday morning, KCC showed an increase of .86 percent, or 11 students gained for a student headcount for 1,289 students registered.
“These numbers should go up slightly because we have late registration going on through Friday afternoon,” Nishiguchi said.
Nishiguchi said the increase in the spring semester is probably due to a larger percentage of fall semester students continuing into the spring semester.
“This is a good school,” said Michael Simi of Kapaa who is starting his second semester at KCC. “They’re nice people, the teachers are great, and if you go to the right people, you get a lot of help.”
