LIHUE — With just one more game remaining on its calendar, Kauai High School’s junior varsity girls soccer team has yet to be scored on.
Kauai JV girls, currently leading the Kauai Interscholastic Federation standings with an undefeated record, took the Thursday match against Kapaa, 3-0.
The Kapaa JV boys, currently leading the KIF division standings, kept its undefeated record intact, leaving Vidinha Stadium with a 0-0 deadlock against the Kauai JV boys.
“We meet you one more time,” said Curtis Langstaff, the Kapaa JV boys coach, during the post-game congratulatory line.
Throughout the game, the Warrior JV boys maintained an offensive posture, keeping the Kauai defense busy. Late in the game, the JV Warriors fired a shot from the right pocket, the ball glancing off the goal post.
But the Kauai goalkeeper reacted with a lunging save, completing the move with a roll outside the plane to prevent the score.
“One of our goals before the season started was to keep from being scored on,” said Kevin Gusman, a coach with the Kauai girls team. “With one more game remaining, we hope to fulfill that goal.”
Kauai battled the tenacious Kapaa JV girls, coached by Jantill and Keoni Leota throughout most of the first half before Britney Ehia was able to loft the ball over the efforts of Kainani Moniz for the 1-0 halftime bulge.
The Red Raiders took an offensive posture off the break, but the efforts of its offensive line was effectively handled by the defense of Micaela Costa, Moniz, and Kasen Tone.
The effort took its toll when Analeigha Carvalho-Toloai’s strong midfield performance was marred by a yellow dissent card.
Despite the effort, Kauai got an early second-half goal when Railee Layosa found the net in heavy traffic on the rightside.
Late in the game, Kalena Kazen-Batteiger capped the victory on an assist from Caley Caires whose shot from about 25 yards out was stopped by the Kapaa defense, and in the brief moment of unprotection, Kazen-Batteiger kicked the ball in.
