KAPAA — Volunteers and students made it a day on — and not a day off — Monday to help improve the Kapaa branch Boys & Girls Club in honor of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
About 100 people turned out for the service project at the Kapaa clubhouse. There was plenty of painting and gardening to do, followed by a meal and cultural entertainment.
“This was an amazing opportunity to get our three clubhouses in Lihue, Waimea and Kapaa together for Martin Luther King Day of Service,” said Tim Motts, Kauai B&GC president and CEO.
Some people think of this as a day off, but Motts said it is important to appreciate the efforts of Martin Luther King and every one involved with the struggle for civil rights.
“Martin Luther King said, ‘it’s not just about me,” Mott said. “He said ‘I may be comfortable in my house, but what can I do to make the world a better place and in a selfless way.’”
The guests were honored with Hawaiian chants followed by Hawaiian hula and Tahitian dances.
Keio Wakute, 11, started coming to the club in September and has made new friends. He said coming to the MLK Day event was a way to show he could also be “one of the nice people.”
“You’re the example that is setting the bar for everyone else,” Motts said to the kids. “When you go to school tomorrow and every one talks about what they did on their day off then you know what you will be able to say.”
