PUHI — Ciara Caires scored two goals to lead the Kauai High School girls to a 7-0 win over Island School Monday at the Island School soccer facility.
The Voyagers’ girls squad entered the field without the services of two of its key players, Madison Moore being absent and Cambria Ort sidelined with an injury.
Despite the setback, the Voyager women held Kauai to a 1-0 half, Wailana Gandeza finding the net on a break-away down the right wing and firing past the Voyager goalkeeper.
Coming off the break, Kauai capitalized on a new Voyager goalkeeper when its starting keeper was taken off the field following an injury.
Kauai also replaced its goalkeeper, Nawai Hamburg, with Baily Hanna, moving Hamburg to the forward position where she finished with an assist on Caires’ goal.
Following Caires’ pace, Kauai got nets from Kawehi Taniguchi, Caitlyn Cantorna, Kaylee Tamura, Marissa Ruiz, and Gandeza.
• The Red Raider men followed the pace, Shane Ogata getting the go-ahead goal to lead the Kauai High School boys to a 2-1 edge over the Voyagers.
Pono Bukoski put the Kauai boys on the scoreboards early with a shot from the pocket for a 1-0 lead which stood for a period of strong defensive wrangling by both teams.
Kauai team captain Kaiea Iwasaki was having a less-than-stellar day, getting sent to the sidelines on an incidental language yellow card.
The defensive slugfest continued as Island School worked to contain the Kauai personnel change which saw Jared Okayama move to the mid-forward position.
Once in, Kaiea got another bump as a hand ball sent Kellan Wortman behind the ball to knot the contest, 1-1 at the half.
Coming off the break, the Red Raiders made more subtle adjustments, and Ogata broke the stalemate on a shot from the pocket.
