LIHUE — Kauai Island Utility Cooperative will host a candidate’s forum from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Kapaa Public Library.
The KIUC board is making crucial decisions on the island’s electrical generation and efficiency solutions that impact everyone, the event’s sponsors, Wailua/Kapaa Neighborhood Association and Apollo Kauai, said in a press release. Questions at the forum will range from reasons for running to alternative rate structures.
There are two ways for a candidate to end up on the ballot. They can be nominated by a committee comprised of people appointed by the board who interview prospective candidates and put them on the ballot. Those candidates are Peter Yukimura, David Iha, Teofilo “Phil” Tacbian and Stewart “Stu” Burley for the March 8 ballot.
Co-op members can also gather 35 member signatures on a petition to become a candidate. Deadline for petitions is Monday.
Candidates will be announced Monday and ballots will be sent to residents beginning Feb. 10. Members can vote for three board positions by ballot or online.
