Ed Kawamura is well on his way to a Happy New Year, having to worry about turning 180 pounds of mochi rice (Lily Kawamura said that’s more than 40 batches!) into the New Year delicacy on Sunday.
Matthew Kawamura was busy recording the event with his new lens, a Nikon 18-300 (that’s a lot of glass) and Nicole Balbarino created the Butter Strawberry special.
Laurie Ho said she invited Nadine Nakamura’s mother-in-law to experience her first mochi pounding and even had some guests from Maryland in tow.
Terry Phillips was on crutches, but that didn’t stop her from making mochi. She said she found mizuna at Times Supermarket and had to get it quickly.
Over at the Kauai Community Market, Sandi Kato-Klutke said she was going to do about 30 pounds of mochi, but had some Kinako Bits as a teaser for shoppers, and Elvrine Chow was sharing her tent with the kadomatsu.
Happy New Year, Kauai!
