Heather Roberts, a Kauai High School alumni, was named the 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association, Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year Thursday.
Roberts, a 2000 graduate of Kauai High School and whose father, Rich Roberts, was a former volleyball coach at the Red Raiders’ gym, has led the Colorado Orediggers to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, securing the 2012 and 2013 RMAC Championships, states a release from Colorado.
During 2012, Roberts earned an AVCA Thirty Under 30 Award, helping the season post a 130-58 overall record, or a .691 winning percentage, during her six seasons at the No. 19 Colorado School of Mines volleyball program.
Roberts, in her sixth season as an assistant coach, has done nothing but win in her time at the Colorado School of Mines, states an AVCA release.
Back in 2009, Roberts helped guide the Orediggers to its second-ever NCAA post-season appearance, and has made the tournament every year since, and following the 2012 RMAC Championships, helped replace six seniors off the championship squad.
Roberts, who also serves as the recruiting coordinator and defensive coordinator for the volleyball program, is a graduate of William Woods University in Fulton, Mo., in 2005.
Following her graduation from Kauai High School, Roberts served as a starting setter and rightside hitter at the William Woods University from 2001 through 2004, serving as the Owls’ co-captain and earning the First Team All-Conference, Academic All-Conference, Honorable Mention All-Conference, Region V Setter of the Week, and WWU Student-Athlete of the Month honors during her college career.
Following her master’s degree from Bemidji State in sports studies in 2007, Roberts spent the season as an assistant coach at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, formerly the University of Missouri – Rolla.
While pursuing her master’s degree, Robers served in the capacities of assistant coach and interim head coach at Bemidji.
Her coaching experience also includes a pair of club-level positions with the USA Junior Olympics Volleyball organization. Serving as the head coach of the Pookela Volleyball Club in Lihue from 1999 to 2001, Roberts also guided the Central Missouri Volleyball Club from 2003 to 2005, returning to Kauai to spend time as an assistant coach for the Kauai High School varsity volleyball team during the summer of 2002 to 2004.
Roberts received her award as the 2013 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Seattle on Friday in conjunction with the 2013 AVCA Annual Convention.
