HONOLULU — Kapaa High School’s girls basketball team was defeted by Molokai 41-35 in the second round of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II girls basketball state tournament in Honolulu.
Warriors head coach William Aki said his team took more shots than the opponent but weren’t making them.
“(We took) a lot of shots but weren’t scoring any points,” he said in a phone interview. “We just hurt ourselves with a lot of turnovers as well.”
The Warriors coach said the game was closely contested, but the game started to slip away in the third quarter.
“We only scored two points in the quarter,” Aki said. “We were kind of dissapointed, but that’s how it goes. It’s win or go home.”
Kapaa junior guard Ariel Cummings said the game was lost because the team couldn’t get its offense started early.
“It wasn’t them. It was us. We were playing slow,” she said in a phone interview. “We had no energy in the first half at all.”
Kapaa will play play the loser between Honokaa and Kalani in the consolation bracket.
Aki said he hopes his team can get started faster for its upcoming game.
“These two teams are quick. We just got to play faster,” he said.
Cummings also said she hopes the team can get its offense going quicker today.
“We need to find something to pump us up fast,” she said. “We need to play our game. That’s bottom line.”
