LIHUE — A Lihue man under federal investigation regarding gambling allegations has resigned his post as a Kauai Police Commissioner.
Bradley Chiba is allegedly under investigation for illegal gambling. He was serving his fourth year as a commissioner.
“Due to the ongoing investigation, it is my understanding that Bradley has decided to resign from the police commission,” said Commission Chair Charles Iona. “As is the case with our justice system, we believe that all individuals are innocent until proven guilty. However, I respect Mr. Chiba’s decision.”
According to Hawaii News Now, FBI agents searched Chiba’s home in Lihue, on Super Bowl Sunday, on the suspicion he was booking illegal bets on football games. They took a computer and some paper documents but did not arrest Chiba, HNN said.
Chiba was appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the Kauai County Council to serve on the seven-member police commission on Jan. 1, 2010. He was re-appointed to a three-year term on Jan. 1, 2013. He was elected to serve as a 2014 commission vice-chair at the December meeting.
As a Department of Public Safety employee since February 2004, Chiba is the manager of the Intake Service Center. He is responsible for supervision of offenders at Kauai Community Correctional Center.
DPS spokesperson Toni Schwartz said the outside investigation has to do with matters in Chiba’s personal life unrelated to his work.
“All I can say is that he (Chiba) is employed with us,” Schwartz said. “He is still employed with the department pending the outcome of the investigation.”
