LIHUE — Power has been restored to all of Hanamaulu following a Wednesday morning traffic accident on Kuhio Highway that caused a road closure, non-life threatening injuries and an extended power outage for most of the surrounding area.
The crash occurred around 12:40 a.m. when a 21-year-old female driver of a Nissan pickup truck reportedly fell asleep at the wheel while heading east on the highway. The truck then veered off the eastbound lane and struck and sheered a utility pole near the Laukona Street intersection.
The wreck caused a power outage for most of Hanamaulu, including Kalepa Village. Utility crews worked through the night to replace the pole and restore power to the area.
According to Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, all power was back up by 8:20 a.m.
The driver of the truck was transported to Wilcox Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She was released Wednesday. Her male passenger, 18, reported minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.
According to police, no arrests or citations were issued.
Laukona Street and Kuhio Highway, from Nuku Street to Laulima Street, were closed in both directions until 7 a.m. Lower Laukona Street remain closed until 8:30 a.m.
