LIHUE — It has been an event nearly three years in the making, but Kauai residents will now have three dog parks on the island to share with their four-legged friends.
A group of Wailua and Kapaa residents who have pushed for a dog park will host an opening ceremony beginning at 11:30 a.m. today in Wailua Homesteads Park next to the tennis courts and pavilion area.
The 1.5-acre dog use area includes double-gated entrances for a separated one-acre play area for large dogs and a half-acre section for small dogs under 30 pounds.
Construction on the project began in August and was completed last month.
When it is opened, the Wailua Homesteads dog park will be the first one on the island to be built on county-owned land.
The other two, Freddie’s Dog Park at the Kauai Humane Society in Puhi and the North Shore Dog Park in Kalihiwai, are located on private property for public use.
