Kauai’s Malia Manuel beat out Silvana Lima of Brazil by 4.06 points Saturday at the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic in Newcastle, Australia.
Surfing in the quarterfinals of the Surfest 2014 event in clean and punchy three-foot surf, fellow Kauai surfer Nage Melamed did not fare as well, dropping to another Hawaii surfer, Alessa Quizon, 15.23-14.00.
With the win, Manuel advances to face Sage Erickson of the USA who took her heat over Dimity Stoyle of Australia by 3.71 points. The semifinals is expected to run Sunday.
Erickson has had a great record at the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic, reaching the quarterfinals and semifinals over the past two years, states a release from the Association of Surfing Professionals.
“Going into that quarterfinal with Dimity, I knew it was going to be a tough one,” Erickson said. “She’s last year’s champion and in her last few heats, she was getting high eights and nines. I knew I had to work really hard and paying attention to the change in conditions really helped me get the win.”
Melamed’s defeat by Quizon places her in equal fifth place, described by ASP as a “very good result.”
The 2014 Surfest Newcastle Australia features the Burton Toyota Pro, a Men’s ASP 6-Star, and the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic, a Women’s ASP 6-Star, along with eight supporting events.
