The suspect accused of robbing the Bank of Hawaii — Kapaa branch was arraigned in 5th Circuit Court on Tuesday.
Joshua Carlsen, 36, of Kapaa, is charged with the second-degree robbery that occurred just before 1 p.m. Jan. 28. He was in custody and brought from Kauai Community Correction Center.
Carlsen was brought into court at 8:47 a.m. He turned to greet a companion who was watching from the gallery.
Chief Judge Randal Valenciano set a trial date of May 5 for the case. Carlsen, formerly of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., entered a plea of not guilty.
Carlsen remains in custody on $250,000 bail. The court denied an oral request to resuce bail, but said the defense was free to file a motion once the probation department completes its bail study report.
State Deputy Public Defender Samuel Jajich said it was appropriate since bail had been set prior to the district court ruling against the prosecutor’s motion for an extended term of imprisonment in the case if convicted.
County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Shauna Lee Cahill represented the state. She objected to reduced bail.
Kauai District Court Judge Trudy Senda ruled there was probable cause to charge the second-degree robbery charge following a preliminary hearing on Feb. 5. The case was then committed to the 5th Circuit.
The suspect never produced a weapon during the crime, and made off with about $8,000. Around $5,000 was recovered by police that night at Carlsen’s home on Hauaala Road.
