The County of Kauai should pass a law stating everyone must wear socks and shoes in public.
If Kauai’s citizens have no morals or values, then our government must find values for them.
Does that sound ridiculous to you? It should.
Who cares if someone else chooses to wear slippers or shoes? Even if one walks the streets barefoot, does it affect others? No.
Our country’s Declaration of Independence states all of us are created equal and are entitled to certain rights, “among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
If how one lives his or her life does not affect our ability to live ours, then in turn we should give them the same respect.
In light of recent events regarding NFL prospect Michael Sam, I hope that idea rings loudly.
The New York Daily News reported Washington lobbyist Jack Burkman is pushing to introduce federal legislation to Congress that would ban gay athletes from the NFL.
“We are losing our decency as a nation,” Burkman said, according to the report.
“Imagine your son being forced to shower with a gay man. That’s a horrifying prospect for every mom in the country. What in the world has this nation come to?
“If the NFL has no morals and no values, then Congress must find values for it,” he said.
Sound familiar?
Sam’s decision to openly express his sexual orientation hasn’t affected my life in the least and I seriously doubt it has affected Burkman’s life either.
Burkman said forcing other men to be in a locker room with Sam is a “horrifying prospect.”
Sam’s former teammates at the University of Missouri didn’t have a problem when he came out to them back in August. In fact, it was a non-issue.
“Mike is a great guy, a great leader … He’s a great guy to be around,” said Missouri defensive lineman Markus Golden in a report by FOX Sports. “You don’t think about all that other stuff that’s going on.”
Just knowing that about Sam, coming from a teammate nonetheless, should be enough to know he is a decent person.
Sure, I understand it may be awkward for some in the NFL if and when Sam gets drafted.
But if a college team made it work without a hitch, then there is no reason why a professional team would have problems either.
Just let the man live his life.
