If you missed Tuesday night’s game at Kauai High School, then you ought to be kicking yourselves because you missed one hell of a basketball game.
I knew beforehand it had all the makings of a great contest.
With one team having the chance to wrap up the conference title and the other fighting to extend its season, it was a fantastic showdown.
Truthfully, this game was more competitive and exciting than this year’s Super Bowl.
The hard truth, unfortunately, is that with each winner is a loser for every game.
On one side there was the sweet bliss of victory and on the other side was the agonizing heartache of defeat.
This game was no exception — in fact, it was the epitome of the reality that is sports.
Though it was unfortunate the intense nature of the game led to both benches being cleared, it is also the factor of emotion that makes sports compelling.
The game itself wouldn’t hold much bearing if the teams just played for the sake of playing.
However, it was apparent how important this game was when I saw the faces of each player, coach and spectators.
Every time a player congratulated a teammate for making a crucial play, when the roar of the crowd grew louder with each basket made as the clock wound down, and even when benches cleared when tensions reached a boiling point, I saw the immensity of how invested everybody in the building was.
More than ever, I understood these games are far-reaching, not just for the players and coaches, but for the student bodies and communities who wholeheartedly support their school.
It is with that sense I am glad to have witnessed it.
Games like these are why I’m excited to write about sports and I’m eager to see what else the KIF has in store.
With that, I’d like to congratulate the winning team on a hard fought victory and best of luck at the state tournament.
For the team that just fell short, especially its seniors, I hope you don’t hang your heads for too long.
I’ve seen the banners in your gym. Rather than dwell on this one season, I hope you celebrate the success you’ve enjoyed throughout your entire high school careers.
