KALAHEO — Blaze Batoon came up with four points in the final 24 seconds of their match Tuesday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Batoon’s efforts for Team Lihue came up short as Kapaa Da Lightning marked its second win of the season 24-14 during the county’s youth basketball league hosted by the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation.
“We’re the only all-girl team in Division 1, or students in the 3rd and 4th grades,” said Da Lightning coach Tom Rubel. “Only one girl had any experience with basketball. We’re a soccer team.”
Hailey Overmeyer, a familiar name on the soccer fields, led the Kapaa Da Lightning team in scoring with a game-high 11 points followed by Tierra Washington, normally a goalkeeper, who scored five points and Kaia Davis-Caberto Salvador added four points. Tea Rosa and Kiani Pia Salvador rounded out the win with a pair each.
“This is only our second win this season,” Rubel said. “We’ve lost six games, but of those, only one game was a double-digit loss. The girls have kept up with the boys through the entire season.”
Syrus Delos Reyes topped the Team Lihue scoring with Batoon and Mike Questin each adding four points.
With 2:11 left in the match, Hanakila’s Anthony Gallego launched a pair to give the team from the Hanalei-Kilauea area a 24-22 lead.
Team Central’s center, Matthew Rivera, poked back at the bulge and dropped a bucket at the 1:21 mark to force overtime on a 24-24 deadlock to the Division 1 matchup.
Team Central took a 7-0 lead following the opening period, fueled by four points from Keylan Calapatia. But with Team Central scoreless second period and limited to just a pair in the third stanza, the teams tied 9-9 at the break.
Gallego, who poured in seven of his game-total marks in the second and third period, led Hanakila to the halftime stalemate.
Andrew James “AJ” Galiza dropped five points and Rivera added four points as Team Central outdistanced Hanakila 9-5 in the fourth frame.
The exchange continued as Team Central was held to just a pair in the fifth, Hanakila surged ahead with six points fueled by Kala Rall who dropped four of his game-total eight points in the period.
Following the nail-biting 2-minute overtime, officials declared the match a tie at 24-24.Rivera topped the Team Central scoring with 10 points followed by Calapatia ending with six points. Galiza added five points, all in the fourth period, and Cale “Laa” Aceret got a pair.
Rall topped the Hanakila scoring with eight points followed by Gallego with seven points.
Wendell Soriano finished with four points, Ian Correa and Derrick Jarquio each added a pair and Shine Winter had a point in the effort.
“Entering the hall, I said I was hoping for a good game to end our season,” said Hanakila coach David Simon. “This was one good game and a great way to finish.”
Bryce Fernandez chalked up six points to lead the Supersonics to a 23-16 win over Team Lihue B in the sole Division 2, or boys in the 5th and 6th grade, match.
Mayson Broyles and Aden Ringor each netted second-half four points for the winning team.
Hunter Oligo, Jhay Bryan Quiocho and Mareyon Cromertie each dropped a pair. Shawn Rapacon had five points and Mike Questin finished with four points to lead the Team Lihue B effort, Michael Navarro and Ua Gonsalves each added pairs and Rigo Flores got a free throw.
A trio of Division 2 boys games are on tap Thursday starting at 6 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
