Bonjolea II took advantage of the return of the trade winds to take the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Shakedown Series, Race No. 5, Thursday.
The winds returned to the 10-15 knot range from the north northeast and Bonjolea II grabbed the lead from the start, crossing the 5.12-mile course on an elapsed sail of 54 minutes, 13 seconds, later corrected to 57:46 PHRF for top honors.
Ken Martinez, NYC Rear Commodore, said the race was exciting with the fleet following Bonjolea II, finishing within 2 minutes of each other.
Bonjolea II was chased by Papaau on a 1:03:35 elapsed sail, fourth overall in the fleet, and corrected to 1:00:52 PHRF for second place in the race.
Fast Company finished second overall at a 1:01:01 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:01:07 PHRF for third place in the race.
Chaos, a Hobie 33, crossed the line third overall at 1:02:02 elapsed and corrected to 1:02:25 PHRF for fourth place honors.
OZone, winning three of the previous Shakedown Series races, crossed the line on a 1:02:22 elapsed sail, 20 seconds behind Chaoes, and corrected to 1:02:28 PHRF, fifth place by just three seconds.
Weatherly, who dogged OZone at the finish line on a 1:02:32 elapsed sail, ten seconds back of the Olson 30, corrected to 1:02:38 PHRF followed by Speedy (1:03:36 elapsed, 1:03:42 PHRF) and Trinity, an F-28 trimaran, crossed just three seconds behind Papaau at 1:01:32 elapsed, but corrected to 1:10:03 PHRF.
Trinity also corrected to 53:35 CLUB for top honors in that class.
The final race of the NYC Shakedown Series will take place Thursday and the NYC Race Committee invites the public to view the competition from the jetty wall vantage point when first flags fly at 5 p.m.
