A job fair next weekend will provide opportunities to fill full and part-time positions at a dozen outlets at Kukui Grove Center.
And come ready to sit down and talk work. A resume would be a good idea, too.
“Dress appropriate for job interview,” said Adele Manera, an employment service specialist with Work Wise Kauai. “They may just be handing out information but be ready for an on-site interview.”
There will be opportunities with current businesses, including around 110 jobs with new merchants Pier 1 and Sports Authority that will open in May. The outlets will have their corporate recruiting teams on Island from the Mainland.
“The job fair is a great opportunity for Kauai residents to learn about employment opportunities with some of the island’s best retailers,” said Kukui Grove Center General Manager Wade Lord. “Participants will get a chance to meet our new tenants.”
The job fair will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Saturday and Sunday at the Kukui Grove Center Food Court.
Kukui Grove represents over 50 businesses and offers a wide range of employment opportunities within the retail, food and beverage, and the sales industry. Several new tenants will be announced over the next 12 months
Job seekers can meet with representatives from Macy’s, Times Supermarket, Starbucks, FootLocker, GNC, Zales, American Savings Bank, Vitamin World, Jeans Warehouse, Genki Sushi, Déjà vu Surf and others.
Job applications often require information about work history. Make sure you have addresses and work period of past employment, along with the salary information and contacts of supervisors. Some businesses many have online applications but others will take a resume with the hand-written application.
It might be a good idea to create an account on the state job service website, hirenethawaii.com, where all of the resume and work history information can be entered and available online.
Ron Nelson, the human resource manager for Macy’s, said they are looking for some part-time sales people.
“The job fair is an opportunity to go and find the best candidates out there,” Nelson said. “We certainly have jobs available and this is a good time to come and apply.”
Nelson said Macy’s applications are done online. Staff will be there to answer questions and to hand out information and job seekers can apply at home or on the store computers.
“I can explain how the process works and talk about career opportunities,” Nelson said. “We want to promote from within.”
Everything is done by email with a conformation that the application was received within 24 hours, he said. A second email a few days later will indicate if Macy’s would like to have an interview.
Cherie Cabading, human resources manager for Times and Big Save, said they will be looking to fill jobs at all of their island stores at the job fair. They use written resumes that applicants can complete on the spot or take home. Resumes are also welcome.
Times staff may conduct a brief interview on the spot, but a formal interview would follow at another time before someone would be considered for a position.
Times is looking to fill cashier-clerk positions, along with food service, baker clerks, kitchen and relief managers.
Kevin Cremer said he has a good job but was surprised to learn how many jobs are available at Kukui Grove.
“It would be nice to know what opportunities are out there,” he said.
Kaitlin Caberto is a coffee barista to support herself as a full-time college student. She said the job fair announcement is intriguing and plans to attend.
“A second job would mean more money and it will be interesting to see what opportunities are here,” she said.
Jane Oshita and Baylie Caberto said they were not aware of the job fair but now they would like to attend. Both are interested in the customer service jobs.
“I like to help people look for things,” Caberto said.
“I will definitely check it out,” Oshita said.
Over $500 in door prizes will also be awarded during the two-day event. A $50 gift card goes to the first 20 candidates who attend the job fair and get hired.
“It’s more than just working at mall, being in the retail industry is a wonderful career,” said Jonell Kaohelaulii of Kukui Grove Center. “Whether you’re just entering the workforce or looking for a long-term career, this job fair is the place to get started.”
