LIHUE — Kauai’s Christian Sarmiento and Waimea’s Henry Delos Reyes walked off with state qualifying standards following the third qualifying track meet Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
Following on their heels, the boys picked up eight consideration standards, including Sarmiento getting two and Delos Reyes getting one.
The girls from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation member schools walked off with a state qualifying run and seven consideration standards led by Waimea’s Kawena Warren, who had an auto and two consideration standards, and Island School’s Chan Hsu pocketing two consideration runs.
Sarmiento notched his state standard with a first finish in the boys high jump, clearing 6 feet, the cutoff for the state qualification.
He also finished second to Delos Reyes in the triple jump, leaping for 40 feet, 4 inches, surpassing the 39-10.5 consideration standard posted on the Kauai wall.
“His goal was 41 feet,” said Marlo Louis-Medeiros, a Kauai coach. “This was pretty close, so I think he’ll build up for the next meet.”
Sarmiento’s second consideration standard came with his first finish in the boys 200 meter dash where he stopped the clock at 23.5 seconds, clearing the state consideration mark of 23.64 seconds.
Delos Reyes made his mark with a first finish in the boys triple jump, leaping for 41-09.5 and surpassing the state qualifying standard of 41.-02.50.
He went on to pocket a consideration standard in the long jump where he took first place on a 20-04 leap, bettering the consideration 19-08 mark.
Island School’s Michael Miller walked off with two distance run consideration marks, getting first in the boys 1,500 meter run on a 4:34.08 run and clearing the consideration mark of 4:34.94. He added his second consideration with a first finish in the boys 3,000 meter run, stopping the clock at 10:02.70, ahead of the 10:11.74 standard.
“This is my first year running track, so I’m learning,” said Kapaa’s Micah Nobriga-Ferris, who earlier in the year topped the KIF cross country circuit. “I have one more year, and next week is another race.”
Nobriga-Ferris finished third in the 1,500 Meter (4:42.91) and second in the 3,000 Meter (10:14.70).
Waimea’s Destin Miguel got a consideration in his first finish of the boys 100 meter dash (11.31/11.44) with Lopaka Ventura hot on his heels at 11:34/11.44 for second place.
The Kauai High School Boys “A” 4×400 relay team rounded out the consideration standards in the boys arena with a first finish 3:41.99, clearing the 3:41.84 cut.
Warren topped the girls arena with a trio of state performances, getting past the auto standard of 16.64 with her first finish in the girls 100 meter hurdles where she stopped the clock at 16.39, an improvement over her last week’s 16.63 in stiff winds.
Warren also topped the girls 300 meter hurdles on a 51.79 finish over the consideration 51.84 mark, and rounded out her day tied for first place with Kapaa’s Heather Faretta on a 4-10 consideration jump in the Girls High Jump.
Kapaa’s Kaylee “Lele” Silva, who tied with Waimea’s Talia Young and Island School’s Moeko Fukada for second at 4-08, said she was having trouble with her ankle and was just doing the high jump.
“I don’t know what I did,” the Kapaa senior said. “I woke up this morning, and there was this irritation in the upper ankle area. But I’m working with Heather and pushing her.”
Hsu, a veteran of the KIF cross country circuit where she finished tops, made her marks in the 1,500 meter run where she finished second to Kauai’s Krista Schnackenberg on a 5:17.83 run, bettering the consideration 5:29.14 mark.
“It’s wonderful,” Schnackenberg said following her first finish where she stopped the clock at 5:14.90, nearly 15 ticks ahead of Hsu. “This is the first time I’m running this race. Last week, we only ran the 3,000 meter.”
Hsu’s second consideration came with her first finish in the girls 400 meter dash where she stopped the clock at 1:03.72, bettering the consideration 1:05.14 mark, and falling short of the KIF record of 1:03.0 set in 1999 by Jasmine Barber of Kauai High.
Waimea’s Kaena Kaohelaulii rounded out the girls consideration runs, finishing first in the 100 meter dash on a 13.24 run and just clearing the 13.24 consideration mark.
The qualifying track meets continue on Thursday starting at 4:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium. There is no admission charge to view the qualifying, or the KIF preliminary meets.
There will be a charge for the KIF championship meet on Apr. 25.
