LIHUE — Eleele resident Debralynn DeSilva Carveiro filed her nomination papers on Thursday to run for mayor in this year’s election, becoming the first person so far to try unseat Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.
“Reading the newspaper gives a person a lot of insight as to how our aina is being run and the amount of challenges we encounter on a daily basis, but it also relieves tension when you read about people wanting to make a difference on the island,” DeSilva Carveiro wrote in a letter to the editor on Wednesday. “It brings a new meaning to opportunities in a island.”
Although Carvalho announced that he would run for a second full-term as mayor in October, he has not yet filed his nomination papers.
