The Ulupono Initiative is investing millions to form Hawaii Dairy Farms on Kauai. The dairy is planned for 582 acres of Grove Farm property in Mahaulepu on acreage designated as Important Agricultural Lands.
According to a press release, the dairy is conceived on a pastoral model developed in New Zealand, with cows divided into groups and rotated through several different fields, where they will be primarily grass fed.
Expectations are to begin with about 880 animals, eventually expanding to around 2,000. Officials say extensive planning has gone into issues such as manure and other wastes.
Several Kauai residents and groups have voiced concerns about the dairy farm and its potential impact on the environment. Many have called for the dairy farm to be scrapped.
Ulupono Initiative representatives have held several meetings with the Kauai community, both in small and large public settings.
“They have laid out the concepts and listened to concerns,” the release said.
