According to Kauai police, Rico Yap of Lihue was the driver of a Toyota pickup truck that was traveling west on Rice Street about 3:50 a.m. The vehicle drifted off the roadway and sideswiped a utility pole at the corner of Rice and Eiwa Street, before striking another utility pole fronting the Kauai Museum.
Yap was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. There were no other passengers in the vehicle at the time of the collision.
Police closed Rice Street, between Haleko Road and Umi Street, for roughly three hours for an investigation and clear the roadway of debris. Rice Street was reopened in both directions at 7 a.m.
An investigation continues.
