PUHI — Kauai High School split its series against Island School Saturday at Kauai Community College.
The Kauai High School boys teams were victorious, 5-1 over the Voyagers. Its girls teams, however, dropped 4-0 to Island School, the fifth match being tied before being rained out.
“Island School had to default its second and third boys doubles due to spring break and the boys being away on trips,” said Charles Fulks, the Kauai coach. “The Kauai girls lost to a more experienced Island School team, and the rain chased away the third set of the third girls doubles match.”
Davis Huffman, the top Voyager boy, controlled Francis Perez on the boys first singles court, 6-0, 6-0 for Island School’s sole win on the boys courts.
Kauai’s Byeong Lee got past Francis Green on the boys second singles court.
“Francis was a scrappy competitor, but came up short,” Fulks said.
On the boys doubles courts, the Red Raider duo of Ricky Oshita and Clinton Sibolboro topped the Voyager pair of Sam Goldberg and Andy Anderton, 6-1, 6-0.
Island School defaulted on the boys second and third doubles.
On the girls courts, Michaela Fitzgerald overpowered Tane’ Orial, 6-2, 6-2 on the girls first singles court.
Red Raider Danika Thompson, getting some courtside fan support, battled hard against Island School’s Alex Obert before dropping her match, 1-6, 2-6 over the steady Obert on the girls second singles court.
Kauai’s Stef Gushikuma and Kaylin Kukino gave fans a treat, battling the Voyager pair of Katy Davidson and Ajai Salafari on the girls first doubles court.
Fulks said this was the best match of the day and could have gone either way. However, the Island School duo of Davidson and Salafari edged out Gushikuma and Kukino, 6-7 (7-9), 7-5, 3-6.
Voyagers Brianna Griep and Whitney Summerhays were 6-1, 6-0 winners over Kauai’s Tori Pagador and Madison Rayno on the girls second doubles court.
The Kauai pair of Teyanni Esaki and Mahina Tangonan were tied with Island School’s Mabel Kha and Gabri LaFratta, 4-6, 6-2 before the third set was called on account of the rain.
No results were available from the Kapaa teams at the Waimea courts by press time.
Kauai next travels to the Kapaa High School courts on Saturday while Island School prepares to host Waimea at the Kauai Community College courts.
Both matches start at 10 a.m.
